Prior to being selected to join the SAS at Philippeville in Algiers in 1943, Corporal Morgan had served with the RASC, during which time he made a daring escape from the fall of Tobruk, and also took part in the victorious El Alamein campaign.
After joining the SAS, he worked closely with the legendary Intelligence Officer Major Eric Barkworth, carrying out key secret work in the Desert campaign, and later in Italy where he worked on the intelligence of Major Roy Farran's famous missions. In 1944, he and other members of the Intelligence Unit were pulled back to Scotland to work on the massive behind-the-lines operations to liberate France, Belgium and Holland involving the 1st and 2nd SAS and French and Belgian SAS forces and numerous daring and dangerous operations, until final victory in Germany in 1945. After the liberation of Norway by SAS forces, also in 1945, he was one of those to receive a special scroll of thanks signed by King Olav himself.
